Love the buzz: South Wimbledon and Wimbledon Broadway

Shopping and Leisure

Many of the country’s major high street brands are represented in the Broadway area, including Debenhams and Marks and Spencer. Centre Court Shopping Centre is a popular mall next to Wimbledon station, packed with well-known chain stores, cafes and restaurants.

If you want a shopping experience that’s a little less mainstream, you’ll find trendy Wimbledon Village, with its independent shops, upmarket chain stores, gourmet pubs, cafes and restaurants is not too far away.  Tennis fans will find themselves breathtakingly close to the action here, particularly during the Championships in June, when the streets of Wimbledon Village are crowded with tennis stars, celebrities and fans.

There’s no need to venture into the West End in search of good nightlife, as you’ll find a great range of restaurants, wine bars and nightclubs around Wimbledon station and the Broadway.  There are two cinemas in this area as well as the beautiful New Wimbledon Theatre, plus an internationally renowned children’s theatre (Polka Theatre).  The Nuffield Leisure Centre has a swimming pool, gym and spa, with personal trainers to advise on fitness and wellbeing.

Transport connections

Take the Northern Line from South Wimbledon station and you’ll be at Waterloo in just 23 minutes.  If that’s not fast enough for you, the South West Trains national rail service from Wimbledon’s main station can get you there in just 17 minutes, or you can travel to Blackfriars with Thameslink. The District Line tube from this station goes north to Earl’s Court, with connections to central and west London stations.

A short distance from the Broadway you’ll find the Dundonald Road Tramlink stop on a route that serves south London and Croydon.  If you prefer travelling by bus, local services include the 57, 93, 131, 156, 163, 164, 219, N87 and 200.

The journey from Wimbledon to Heathrow Airport is less than 20 miles while Gatwick is just under 30 miles away.

 

Finding the right school

Wimbledon has more than its fair share of excellent fee-paying and state schools, many of which have been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Popular state primary schools include Dundonald Primary, Bishop Gilpin Church of England Primary, Pelham School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Wimbledon Chase Primary School.  Independent schools include Willington School (for boys 4-13), Donhead Preparatory (for boys 4-11) and Wimbledon High School (for girls 4-18).

King’s College School on Wimbledon Common is a highly rated fee-paying day school for boys aged 7-18 and girls aged 16-18. Putney High School and Wimbledon High School are both rated as excellent independent schools for girls. Wimbledon College and Ricards Lodge High School are both considered good state secondaries.
