Why it's a family affair in the Sisters

Victorian landowners the Shuttleworths were determined to leave their mark on Battersea. They did so by naming roads after their daughters, and Edna, Orbel, Ursula and Octavia are now immortalised in the street names of this area, which lies between Shuttleworth Road in the south and Orbel Street in the north.

The Shuttleworth family chose an ideal patch of land to build this neat grid of roads: situated between the river Thames and Battersea Park and within easy reach of Battersea High Street and fashionable Battersea Square. In the pretty, tree-lined streets of the Sisters conservation area you will find handsome Victorian semi-detached and terraced houses – many of which have been converted into flats.

Shopping and Leisure

While most Battersea residents do their shopping around the Clapham Junction, Lavender Hill and Northcote Road areas, you’ll find a number of convenience stores dotted around Battersea Park Road, to the south of the Sisters. However one of the biggest advantages of living in this area is the fact that the Kings Road with its chic shops, restaurants and bars is just across the river.

If you enjoy green, open spaces then the 83-hectare Battersea Park is just a short walk away, offering a boating lake, a bandstand and all-weather sports facilities.  There’s even an art gallery and a small children’s zoo.

The park often hosts events from food festivals to arts events.

Transport connections

The nearest station to the Sisters is Clapham Junction, where you can catch national rail services to Victoria Station (in 6 minutes) and Waterloo (in 12 minutes) or use services to Wimbledon, Richmond, Kingston and south and west suburban areas.  The overground service from here also offers direct connections to north west and north east London and there’s a direct route to Gatwick Airport.

Buses from Battersea Bridge Road include the 49, 319, 345, N19 and N31.

Finding the right school

Shaftesbury Park Primary School is a state school rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted while independents for the primary age group include Parkgate House School, L’Ecole Du Parc and Eaton House the Manor School (with an intake from 2 to 13 years).  At secondary level there is Thomas’s Clapham (rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted), Bolingbroke Academy (‘Good’), the Centre Academy (‘Good’) and the recently opened Harris Academy in Battersea.
