Northcote Road
Interested in renting property in Northcote Road? Enjoy all this buzzy shopping street in Battersea, South London has to offer.
Northcote Road is one of south west London’s trendiest and most eclectic shopping streets. The traditional shops here are supplemented by a regular market that sells everything from fresh fruit and veg to vintage clothes and designer homewares.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘Nappy Valley’ because of the many affluent young professional families who live here, It extends over half a mile from Clapham Junction in the north to Broomwood Road (linking Wandsworth and Clapham Common) in the south.
Although the area’s attractive Victorian and Edwardian architecture may make you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, you can sense a real contemporary buzz around the shops, cafes, restaurants and art galleries of Northcote Road itself: particularly at weekends when local residents come out in force to shop, drink and dine.

Shopping and Leisure
Whether you are calling at Dove’s the butchers for a juicy steak or Gail’s artisan bakery for some irresistible sour cherry and currant sourdough (a strong contender for Gail’s ‘best toast ever’ title), you’ll get old-fashioned service and attention to detail from Northcote Road’s many traditional retailers.
There’s also plenty to enjoy if you’re into arts and culture: the Northcote Gallery specialises in modern contemporary British paintings and sculpture while the indoor antiques market at number 155a offers a huge, culturally diverse selection of antiques and vintage collectables.
Restaurants include Indian Moment and the more traditional curry house Akash, while Bill’s offers homely dishes such as fish and chips, burgers and steaks made with high quality, fresh ingredients. Osteria Antica Bologna is an old favourite that has been providing good Italian food here for over twenty years.
With delicious street food and high quality stalls selling everything from designer children’s clothes to fresh fish, Northcote Road’s market is a real gem. Open daily from 9am to 5pm, you’ll find reasonably priced food, gifts and fashion items that would be more suited to a high-end London store than a market stall.
Northcote Road is sandwiched between two open green spaces, Wandsworth Common and Clapham Common: ideal if you want to run, play sports or simply take the kids for a walk.
Transport connections
Head northwards to well-connected Clapham Junction station for overground and main line services to Victoria Station (6 minutes) and Waterloo (12 minutes) plus trains to Wimbledon, Richmond, Kingston and the suburbs to the south and west. Towards the south, Wandsworth Common railway station is one stop from Clapham Junction and also serves an overground route to Sutton (via Balham where the Northern Line will take you straight to central London).
Clapham South, also on the Northern Line, is a short bus ride away. Bus routes include the 49, 77, 219 and 337.

Private schools include the Emmanuel School and Northcote Lodge, both close to Wandsworth Common, and Thomas’s Clapham on Broomwood Road. At secondary level Oak Lodge (fee paying) is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted while the state run Bolingbroke Academy is rated as ‘Good’.
This is just a small sample of the many excellent schools in Wandsworth – Northcote residents are simply spoilt for choice when it comes to education.
